Teaching

I will teach two classes in the Wintersemester 2004-2005:

Hauptseminar: "The Politics of International Economics"

Reading list

The seminar will provide an overview of current research on the institutional features of international economic relations. A special focus will be on the role of the US. The seminar will discuss the international political economy of trade, monetary relations, globalization, and development. Using texts from political science and economics, the intention is to provide students from both disciplines (and possibly others) with a theoretical toolbox for undertaking their own research (in particular in a Magister- or Diplomarbeit). Each student is expected to give a presentation on a major theoretical contribution to a relevant topic (i.e. a book, or one/two journal articles) and to write a short research paper (roughly 20 pages) after the end of the semester. A reading list will be available online at the end of August. You can sign up for the class by sending an email to [email protected]. Please include your Fächerkombination and Matrikelnummer.

Lecture: "Money and Financial Markets in the U.S."

The purpose of this lecture is to provide an applied introduction to the main institutional and functional features of monetary and financial relations in the US. It will present the basic set-up of US financial markets, monetary policy, the stock markets, and the banking system. The main goal is to allow participants to fully understand key issues in current US monetary and financial economics and to feel comfortable with the main underlying economic mechanisms. Examples from the EU will be used for comparative purposes. The class is primarily intended for students in Nordamerikastudien in the Grund- or Hauptstudium, but can also be attended by students in BWL or VWL who wish to get an applied introduction to the specific set-up of US financial markets. For students in Nordamerikastudien this class is a useful preparation for my Hauptseminar “US monetary policy in an international perspective” that will be offered in summer 2005. Requirements: regular attendance and a Klausur at the end of the semester. The lecture will be in English. A useful accompanying book is Frederic S. Mishkin: “The Economics of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets” Sixth Edition, Addison Wesley Longman.
